Bacterial Cause of Bad Breath in Children
If the kids have poor hygiene practice, this will show; and if they are not taught as early as possible the necessity of being clean and knowing how to take care of one’s hygiene, they might get used to this and their social life might suffer later on. Most common hygiene problem experienced with children is having bad breath.
Bad breath is usually caused by bacteria, which feed on proteins that have wastes with awful smell.Brushing of teeth may not be easily or regularly done by kids, unlike bathing. This is the reason why kids can be more prone to having bad breath. Bad breath in children may be caused by several reasons but the most common cause is poor dental hygiene. Poor dental hygiene, which includes irregular or improper brushing of teeth and tongue and flossing, may lead to the production of bacteria, which feed on food particles. This may easily be dealt with by teaching kids the proper way of cleaning up their teeth and mouth, and educating them at the same time on how important maintaining fresh breath is. Sometimes, kids do not follow instructions when they are just simply given; reasons are necessary too, to motivate them to do it obediently. You might tell them the consequences of not brushing or flossing their teeth such as having bad breath, which is not good especially if other kids find out about it. Tell them how having a poor dental hygiene can cause tooth decay, which would give them tremendous pain and may cause them to lose their teeth. If dental hygiene is left unsupervised, tooth decay might develop and this is also a cause of bad breath in children. Just like any food that decays, tooth decays have unpleasant smell too. A help from the dentist may help solve this matter.
Aside from poor dental hygiene and tooth decay, some other reasons that may cause bad breath in children are illnesses such as sinusitis, pharyngitis or gum diseases. Since bacteria are the main culprit of bad breath, having this somewhere near the mouth may cause bad breath. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which is usually caused by infection resulting from bacterial, fungal, viral, allergic or autoimmune issues. Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the throat or pharynx, which is commonly known as sore throat. Viral infections, bacterial infections, fungal infections or irritants such as pollutants or chemical substances may cause this. Both sinusitis and pharyngitis may be caused by bacteria, thus if the kid is experiencing this, it may result to bad breath. Gum diseases include Periodontitis, which is an inflammation affecting the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth, and Gingivitis which is the inflammation of the gums surrounding the teeth. Both of these are caused by bacterial infections too, and treating these illnesses may resolve the problem. On the other hand, if the kid still has bad breath even though he has a good dental practice, he may be experiencing any of these inflammations and should be given the proper treatment.
Kids are usually more concern with play, toys and games; seldom will a kid be very much aware of his or her hygiene at a very early stage. If you want your children to develop a proper hygiene practice, you should try to educate him/her about the importance of this. At the primary stage of their life, parents or guardians should be responsible enough to supervise the maintenance of overall hygiene of their children, this will not only ensure the kid’s dental health but this will also be a way to check the other health conditions of the kids which necessitate abrupt attention. It is always a good practice to have a regular visit to a dentist to assess the over-all dental health of your children.
