Dealing with Baby Bad Breath
Baby bad breath is an unusual condition; this is because babies, as cute as they are, are expected to have cute smelling breath too.
Bad breath is caused by bacterial action, thus knowing what leads to this and what can eliminate this may be sufficient to deal with the bad breath problem.
Usually, if a baby has a bad breath, simple cleaning up procedures can help to solve the problem. Babies, typically, eat few types of food, so most probably their bad breath is not caused by food-causing-bad breath such as ginger, onion, or alcohol. Thus, it is helpful enough to rinse the mouth of the baby to get rid of the traces of milk or other food debris. If the baby already has teeth, brush his teeth then rinse it water.
Another cause of bad breath is dry mouth, saliva is our natural mouthwash. You will notice that when a person wakes up after a night’s sleep, he will have the usual “morning breath,” which has an unpleasant smell; this may also be caused of baby bad breath every morning. The lack and stagnant saliva in the mouth makes the reproduction of bacteria in the mouth to speed up. Thus, it is important that the mouth is regularly rinsed to flush out the bacteria. Giving water to babies could help in dealing with this matter.
Babies normally have the sucking habit, it is during this time that they would usually put anything in their mouth –be it their fingers, their hand, or anything that they get hold onto. These things may have bacteria attached to them already, and it is not impossible that these bacteria will be transferred into the mouth of the babies. Thus, it is important to make sure that the things that the baby has the possibility of holding and putting into his mouth should be clean. To get rid of the bacteria, the baby’s milk bottle, toys, pacifiers, and alike should be washed or sanitized thoroughly.
Some cases of bad breath may be caused by something else aside from the mere presence of bacteria in the mouth. Bad breath may also be a sign of other health complications such as gum diseases, throat disease, or nasal foreign bodies. Gum diseases and throat diseases are inflammations, which may be caused by bacterial infections. Since babies cannot talk yet, there could be a possibility that they are having this health condition. For better and more appropriate assistance, seeking medical help is advisable especially if bad breath still is not eliminated even though proper dental hygiene is already practiced. If a foreign object has been stuck in the nasal passage of the child, it might make him breath through his mouth, thus drying the mouth and causing bad breath. But in worse condition, infection could already be present.
It is very important that supervision of the condition and health of the children are closely monitored. They can not yet take care of themselves on their own and do not know yet what is good and bad, thus, it is the adults’ responsibility to ensure that proper precautionary measures to maintain a safe and healthy environment for the children is provided.
